Onsite Flu vaccination benefits for your organisation

Flu vaccines cannot give you the flu

Flu Vaccinations can keep your employees healthy, and whilst some people may think that the flu vaccine can give them the flu, this simply is not true! The flu vaccine contains only inactive particles of the virus to help our immune system create antibodies to fight off influenza. The side effects experienced from the vaccine are usually very mild and most people actually won’t get any at all.

The result of non vaccination means that many employees are exposed to the real threat of contracting the flu, particularly as the colder months set in. Unlike the common cold, most people will feel really quite unwell and be off work for a number of days, sometimes even for over a week. One of the issues with the flu is that people who are infected may not realise that they are in the first 24 hours and therefore continue to attend the workplace where the virus can easily spread from one person to another. Add to the mix, a work environment that encourages shared resources and facilities for productivity purposes, and suddenly the influenza virus is being presented an environment to flourish.

An annual flu shot helps to stop the spread

Throughout 2020 we have witnessed how with one infected person, a virus can transmit rapidly throughout society, and this is no different with influenza in a workplace or school. By providing an annual flu vaccination program for your staff you can help reduce the opportunity for the virus to take hold within your workplace, minimising the impact to lost productivity and revenue, through absenteeism and presenteeism (those that continue to work whilst sick).

In Victoria, for the 2019 Victorian flu season, the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services reported a total of 66,960 confirmed cases of influenza, which represented a significant increase of 492% based on the five-year average. Considering this and the negative impact that absenteeism and presenteeism have to business productivity and revenue, and employee well-being, reduction of influenza through ongoing annual flu vaccinations is paramount to both business and employee health.
